FMC Microbial Control Business

FMC has developed a number of products for the control of microbial pests that plague us on a daily basis. These organisms, often called vectors, reside on hard surfaces as well as in our food supply. Such vectors include viruses, bacteria, and fungi (yeasts and molds). Upon our exposure to certain of these organisms, sickness and disease result. FMC provides products and applications technology that addresses key pathogenic organisms in specific application segments. The peracetic acid product line offers some unique properties for microbial control, that being low pH for surface and transport disruption increasing the cells vulnerability combined with the lysing capability of an oxidizer.

Organisms arising from the processing of poultry are well known for causing illnesses, but the use of FMC Spectrum™ peracetic acid clearly and economically controls such problematic genera as Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter, and Escherichia. Our applications team seeks to support our customers need to address control of these organisms with low capital and efficient methods.

Red meat treatment with FMC Blitz™ peracetic acid has also been effective in reducing microbial loading associated with Salmonella typhimurium, E. Coli 0157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes. Our product can address ground products as well and are more economical that the current standard bearer in this segment, lactic acid. Target treatment includes whole, half, quarter red meat carcasses and parts, trim, and organs.

FMC Clarity™ peracetic acid was developed for addressing the growing aseptic packaging business. It has received FDA approval in March of 2007 and EPA approval as a sterilant to achieve commercial sterility in U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) validated facilities in November of 2006. This followed our February 2006 FDA Food Contact Notification approval that included HDPE, foil, and PET. The process validation will be completed in early 2007.

Additionally, our VigorOx® and VigorOx® LS&D peracetic acid have a wide variety of uses for water treatments and hard surface disinfection which are being expanded beyond their current label registrations. Our HRS™ compliments the VigorOx™ product line by enabling contact times on hard to reach surfaces via foaming systems. It is also a great degreaser and cleans the equipment surfaces by removing fats and oils. Our VigorOx® 15% F&V peracetic acid treatment targets molds and bacteria associated with spoilage on fruits and vegetables and can also be used to sanitize the processing equipment without altering organoleptic properties of the produce. The label applications are currently under expansion.

The microbial control business seeks new and better methods to apply the products while generating new product forms and products to enhance the efficacy of the existing product lines. We are a dedicated team of professionals spanning the fields of biology, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, and business. Look for our new products to enter the market place in 2007 as the FMC Microbial Control Business delivers new technologies to combat disease causing vectors in a variety of environments to which we are exposed.

FMC is continuously improving our knowledge of the peracetic acid process and product, from safety to efficacy.  Our commitment to our products is unsurpassed.
